A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association

The purpose of this statement is to increase awareness of the influence of social factors on the incidence, treatment, and outcomes of CVD; to summarize the current state of knowledge about these factors; and to suggest future directions in research, particularly research on effective interventions to attenuate or eliminate these adverse social influences.

The most significant opportunities for reducing death and disability from CVD in the United States lie with addressing the social determinants of cardiovascular outcomes. Thus, a consideration of the role of social determinants is essential if we are to achieve the American Heart Association 2020 Impact Goals: to improve cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20% while reducing deaths from CVD and stroke by 20%.
